Why Local Media Can Be Your Springboard to Success

Article at a glance:
Local media can position you as a celebrity and expert.
A hometown fan base can help you grow.
Look for shows and publications that are a good fit.

 I admit, I’d be on the first red-eye to New York City if I thought I’d land in the chair next to Matt Lauer on the Today show. Imagine! An audience of millions and Matt Lauer’s hand on my arm!

But while national TV exposure is great, you won’t hear me sobbing if he never invites me to his set. (Well, maybe a sniffle or two – hey, he is Matt Lauer.)  I know that local TV and radio shows, newspapers and magazines can also position me as an expert and a celebrity.

They can help me build a solid fan base that will help carry me to national prominence, if that’s what I want. And they’ll give me a chance to polish my message, so when the big time’s ready for me, I’ll be ready for it.

And local media are far more accessibleeven more so than just 10 years ago.

With state, national and international news now available from myriad sources online, many local outlets are focusing on their community.  Stories and segments about hometown people, events and issues are the one thing they have to offer that can’t be found on a million websites, so if you have a good story to share, you’ll likely find more receptive listeners.

How to get started?

Here are some suggestions:

1. Look for radio and TV shows that have a format for guests. 

Search online for the stations that broadcast in your area and take a look at their websites. Look over show descriptions and if past shows are archived online, take a minute to listen and/or watch.

If they’re not archived, jot down the times and days they air, because you definitely want to experience the show to see if it’s the right fit for you and your message. Pay attention to the topics, the host, the kinds of questions asked and the guests. Think about whether you can tie your message into that format.

2. Look over local newspapers, magazines and online publications for opportunities. 

Read the columns and the articles; what sorts of content do the various editors select?

What topics, tone and length?

How polished is the writing?

Can you provide content that would fit in well?

 If your message is about animal welfare and the publication is about business, can you craft a column, article or tips that will resonate with that publication’s readers?

Or, if you think a reporter might be interested in writing your story, look for the appropriate beat reporter. If you’ve got a new cookbook and a related story idea, i.e. three great Crockpot recipes with just three ingredients, find the name of the food writer.

Think about what you’ll say before you call or e-mail. Your job is to catch the interest of the editor, show host or producer, or reporter, so it’s important to think through what you plan to say.

You can start by showing that you’re familiar with the show or publication:

“I have a topic that would be perfect for Dottie Dolittle’s show about relationships,” or “I’d love to write about how I lost 100 pounds for your ‘Real-Life Losers’ column.”

Explain your segment/story idea as succinctly as possible and provide a phone number where you can be reached at any time during the day. If you start with a phone call, follow up with an e-mail a few days later and vice versa.

Remember, you’re providing content, not selling.

The media will fall in love with you if you provide great, interesting content that resonates with their audience.

They will fall out of love – just like that! – if you use the platform they give you to pitch your book, product or service (that’s why they sell commercials and advertising for)!

The payoff for you being a guest, writing an article or being featured in an article is that you will usually be identified by your name, claim to fame and website: “This is Crazy Joe from Crazy Joe’s Coffee, www.crazyjoecoffee.com.” And that’s where celebrity begins.
  
If you dream of someday dancing with Oprah Winfrey or being interviewed by Howard Stern, don’t give up! Instead, start working toward that now by plugging into your hometown media. Where do you think those big national outlets get their ideas?

There are many ways to start a conversation with people for your direct sales business. I have found that there are 2 different kinds:

1. The kind that sound robotic, agenda driven, and “I am going to get something from you today!” approach that feels pressured and not relaxed.

or…

2. The kind that PULLS people towards you immediately and makes the prospect FEEL comfortable and relaxed.

Now here is a million dollar question:

Which one would YOU prefer to have asked of YOU?

 

I want to tell you a story.

Her name is Lori. Lori was with a weight loss company, and she was struggling a lot. Her business had stalled and she had no answer for why. Because of that, her upline was putting pressure on her. She wanted her to do more meetings, more presentations, more three ways, and more work. And she did. But it started impacting her family. She was gone more, and she was beginning to  not like her direct marketing business. As a matter of fact her husband was getting to the point that he wanted her to stay home and be a mom.

So she quit.

But she had a lot of weight loss product that she had to get rid of, and called me and asked what she should do. I asked her some questions, and found out that her upline had sabotaged her career unknowingly by forcing her to go into desperate mode, not her normal smiling friendly marketing mode.

I asked her to tell me what she was asking folks when she initially contacted them. She did, and I must admit, it was NOT what it should have been as it was pressured. Her upline gave her the script.

She had turned a warm approach into something that was not relaxed, and not natural for her.

I suggested she ask one simple question and then forget about it.

She said ok, and then we chatted about other things.

3 weeks later, she called me.

What should have taken 3 months to do and get rid of, she had done in 3 weeks.

How?

She got back to being herself, and asked the question we discussed and ONLY that question.

And by the way…

She engaged her business with a new power and today has one of the largest teams in her home business company..

Ok…

WHAT was the question she asked?

Understand, that this is for a weight loss company,  but the question can be used for anything.

Here is it:

“Hey, you know some people dont you? I am doing some research. How many people do you know that are struggling with their weight? Would you like to help them?”

READ THAT AGAIN!

Here is for skin care:

“Hey, you know some people dont you? I am doing some research. How many people do you know that are not totally happy with how their skin looks? Would you like to help them?”

Here is for travel:

“Hey, you know some people dont you? I am doing some research. How many people do you know that would love to go on a vacation at about 20% of the normal cost? Would you like to help them do that?”

This approach is what we call “The Research Connection.”

Have you ever sent out a press release for your home based business?

Did you know that most of the sites that do that for you are FREE?

Press releases, especially today where most of them are sent online, are powerful information and marketing tools that are used to promote something you are doing. And that means that you must be DOING something in order to send out a press release.

Many press releases have mistakes that for whatever reason, hinder and hurt the visibility of the release, as well as the recruiting power of it. There are many mistakes that have been made over the years, but we have found that that are three huge mistakes many releases contain when featuring home businesses.

There is a lady out in Portland, Oregon that recently sent out a press releases and paid one of the top press release sites a good sum of money to do it- prweb.com. It is a great tool and site for paid for press release distribution. She spent good money for her release, and well…

Got nothing.

What was her challenge and why did she get hardly any “play” off of it online as well as offline?

She made the 3 HUGE mistakes that many people do, and it hurt her on the search engines as well as with the press.

1. She was in the SELLING mode, not the TELLING mode.

Press releases are for information, not trying to sell something. She actually made it sound like a landing page, and filled it with bullets, and even the template she used was for selling, not a press release.

It not only hurt her with the media picking up her release, but the media saw she was trying to hype a skin care product, not inform the press of a great event or idea. It was  sales piece not a press release.

Press releases must inform and make a statement about an event or something that is happening in the marketplace. yes, this can include a new product introduction but make it about the facts and details of the product, not selling and hyping  the product.

2. She lacked the CONTENT that the media needs to feature it as a story or note of interest.

The new media has really gotten picky over the last 4 years dealing with press releeases as there has been a lot of “spam” out there with people sending out sales pitches disguised as press releases. There ws no real content in the release, and no real story behind the release.

Content is what the media is looking for. Content that makes a good story. Content that helps people. Content that Google loves. And content that will get read by the public.

Content must be interesting and help the public as a whole. It should be about something that people will want to know about, or at least your industry would.

Make sure that your press release content has VALUE to the reader, as well as the media and makes it worthy of being read and distributed.

3. Her press release was way too long.

Press releases for the most part are SHORT and they are BRIEF. They are not a sales page that goes on and on. It is a document that usually is a couple of paragraphs with great information telling about something that is of interest to the public.

Press releases that are very long, never get read, and rarely are picked up.

Why?

Think “sound bits” as in TV or radio.

That is what a press release really is. it is an online “sound bite” of what is going on with a company, product, marketing campaign, or any other type of story. That is why they are short. press releases are ‘scanned” a lot of time by the reader and they want to know quickly about what it says and if it is a log press release, you Will find many release site will not pick it up.

This will cost you  back links and also visibility.

MLM Recruiting is an often misunderstood practice. It has been vilified in many respects by a lot of people.

And rightly so.

Many distributors/consultants in a home business DO NOT understand what mlm recruiting is, let alone how to do it. That lack of knowledge can and will HURT your mlm recruiting results and volume.

Many think that MLM Recruiting is getting people to enroll in their business so they can help the sponsor to make money.

Others think that MLM recruiting is a way they can drag people into their business so the sponsor does NOT have to work.

And still, others believe that MLM recruiting is part scam but yet they do it to make money off of people.

All the above are WRONG.

MLM recruiting is many things, but after 25 years in this great profession, I have come to the conclusion that there is ONE definition of MLM Recruiting that truly will define it as well as broaden the possibilities of it.

No, mlm recruiting is NOT a scam, or a way to earn money off of people.

Far from it.

MLM Recruiting is simply:

” The process of finding, educating, selecting, and helping the right people to take control of their future by owning their their own business.”

THAT is what MLM Recruiting is.

MLM Recruiting is a PROCESS- step by step- of educating the prospect about what your business is all about and then helping them decide if this is for them or not.

MLM Recruiting is about Finding, Educating, and Selecting. You prospect and FIND people to talk to, and educate them about what you have to offer, then select the ones that are right for this profession. They will identify who they are, and who they are not.

MLM Recruiting is about Helping the right people. Your goal is TO HELP people…but the RIGHT people who this business is FOR. There are people that your business is NOT for, and your job is to sift and sort through them to find the right ones.

MLM Recruiting is about Taking Control  of your future. Control is critical to have of you ever want to establish wealth in your life. It is taking control of your time, actions, and where your future is headed.

MLM Recruiting is about owning your own business.  You are recruiting prospects into your business because you want to help them own THEIR own business. It is about owning a business you work out of your home.

How does MLM Recruiting work?

It basically is a 4 step by step process:

1. Find.

You need to find people to talk to, and they are everywhere. You need to find the RIGHT people.

2. Educate.

You must create the exposures that will educate the prospect on what you do and what the whole vision is about. This can be done face to face, over the web, on social media, mobile recruiting, or in a public gathering, or in a home. It can vary, but the education process must take place, and it may take more than one exposure.

3. Follow Up.

You need to reconnect with the prospect and see where they are with what they have seen.

4. Select.

Often called “closing” I believe it is more that you select the people that you want to work with and with that mindset, you will find the right people in mlm recruiting.

MLM recruiting is a process, and an art. If you master mlm recruiting, you will find your success will explode in your network marketing home business.

He is in the personal delivery business and profit margins are not that high any way. And he said they were getting ready to tank even further.

Every  business that exist today are feeling it. Even home businesses. A friend of mine was talking about she might have to close her traveling for her home business down. She has a skin care business, and travels all over the region doing skin care and spa as well as nutrition  appointments. But she said the price of gas has gotten so high that she cannot afford that level of travel anymore. She discovered she was losing money the way she was doing it. And the price of her products has skyrocketed due to gas prices.

Sound familiar?

There is now talk about 5.00 per gallon of gasoline. but folks that are deluded are saying, “never happen in the US.”

Yeah right.

Anything plastic.
